Which game do you like? World of Warcraft or FFXI? I think both of them are interesting, yes so many player cant choose which one he should play. Like one of my friends, he is a long time FFXI player that is thinking of switching over to WoW. He played WoW for a little bit about a year ago (10 day trial) but, eventually switched back to FFXI. He now have a few friends that play WoW in RL and they want him to come on over to WoW to play with them, so which one do you think he should play?
Story in FFXI and WoW are completely different things... Both games have the lore, but an actual story with cutscenes is left out of WoW. It's FFXI's main selling point, it is not called the most storybased MMO for no reason. Everything you do aside from grinding has some kind of story to it, even the quests that do not offer as much reward in sense of items and loot but 99% of the time you get somekind of cutscene to go with the quest, lately they've been getting better and better in quality too. Unfortunately sometimes the development team focuses story rather than the gameplay, but it is really fascinating for an MMO.
As for differences, time is one of them. No more hours of looking for party while sitting in a city. In WoW you can look for an instance or go lvl through quests.
Crafting: You will make money from lvl 1 - lvl 375 No matter what your craft lvl there is a recipe that will make you money. You just have to find it and use it. The downside is that everyone with patience is going to have a maxed out profession. So you might actually make more money with two gathering professions. And lvling Fishing has never been easier.
Storyline: Now in the pre-burning crusade areas the story, known as lore to wow players, is nearly equal to anything in FF11. It's when you hit the outlands that the storyline begins falling apart, mainly because Blizzard keeps going back and changing the past. Wrath however seems to have a better improvement on story telling.
Battles: Fights against NPC's are going to be much quicker than you're used to. Many boss battles rarely go beyond 10 minutes. and elites will be taken down in a minute or 2. Soloing a normal mob of your lvl as a dps class will be no longer than a minute, though healers and tanks will take longer to make the kill because they simply do not have the same damage output.
Graphics: Now here's where the argument can start. I find that FF11 has better cloth movements and the backgrounds are simply amazing. But a lot can also be said about WoW's graphic engine though I'm not a big fan of the choices for alliance looks. And some places in WoW you can notice when they did extra work in an area. One of the old endgame instances, Stratholme, is utterly amazing. Even without knowing the lore behind the place you know after entering that you're in for a hell of a time.
