It is pretty easy for you to decide what gear to use on your character when it comes to PvP. You just need to gear him for the most damage or you gear him to take the most damage. It can be a completely story at the mention of getting geared for instancing or raiding.
It is out of question that the tanks are going to want to have the most effective armor; the DPS players are going to want to have the most up to date weapons and abilities; the healers are going to want maximum healing gear but there're many other points to consider prior to throwing your player out there in a group with many other dedicated players who are ready to challenge them through the difficult instance or raid.
Not only do tanks need to unsure that their gear is best suited for armor but their abilities are very important as well. You're going to need to know that the more strength you have, the more armor and blocking ability you will get with your shield as well as higher attack power resulting in more DPS and threat. To take full advantage of the threat situation, ensure to use a fast one handed weapon, this is because it will greatly increase your threat at a faster rate than with an otherwise slower weapon. Managing your rage is also important. For maximum efficiency as a tank, make sure to use your rage on all of the targets around you, rather than on just one. We suggest using AoE attacks or otherwise high threat abilities.
Healers not only need to able to heal efficiently on one target but need to heal other targets in emergencies. You should make sure that you can take more notice of who is in need of the healing and to keep your own tail clear of any aggro. For healers, the main thing is mana efficiency. While in combat, you should ensure that you are specced to increase your mana regeneration and that you have an awesome amount of intellect to maximize your mana capacity, and spirit to maximize the regeneration rate at which you will gain the mana back after casting spells that use a lot of mana. If you want to make it through a long raid, where bosses are always going to take up to an hour to successfully kill, you're going to need to have amazingly high mana recovery in order to keep the heals up the entire time.
We strongly recommend feral Druids or Rogues because their energy makes it extremely easy fro them to do the damage required at a consistent rate as far as damage classes go. Casters such as Mages and balance Druids have a much harder time in keeping their mana up while in battle and their damage is going to come in bursts, with a long time to regenerate mana in between each powerful spell that requires massive amounts of mana. Rogues and Druids require energy, which constantly regenerates while in battle and will greatly increase their DPS abilities over the time it takes to kill the bosses. Make sure to spec in mana-regenerating abilities if you're a caster, and for energy or rage users, things that will increase the regeneration of those. Combat spec is great for raiding with Rogues, as fury is with Warriors because of the constant DPS, without burst or regeneration time.
It is a fact that the key for raiding and instancing is not to be the best. Be a support trooper, you will do fine with your group. What you do is to attempt to do the most damage but do it for the sake of the group and don't waste cooldowns and such. Don't overheal, do just enough to keep the group alive with your rate of mana regeneration. And lastly, you do not be an a aggro whore, just do what it takes to get through the instance, by the reason that you have the ability to take lots of hits with the healer around, which does not mean that the DPS can kill the aggro fast enough.
