The Sea Turtle is the only mount gained by fishing. In water, riding the Sea Turtle gives a 60% increase in your swim speed. On land, it runs at your normal running speed. It just barely outpaces the Hook of the Master Angler. The turtle is maybe five or so percent faster. Let's not even bring up water walking; the turtle is just blown out of the water there.
Catching the turtle awards the achievement, "Turtles All the Way Down".
Only personal level 30 is required to ride the Sea Turtle. We recommend level 77 or above, with an epic flying mount. This allows you to fly between pools fast. Due to anglers between level 30 and 70 have fewer options for catching the turtle, you can't safely reach all locations. There are some tips for low-level anglers.
Firstly, the Sea Turtle can be caught with fishing skill 1. However, lower skill wastes a lot of time, because many catches will be junk items. We suggest at least 300 personal fishing skill before seriously starting to fish for the turtle. You'll need an effective skill of 575 to fish the turtle is found everywhere, without catching junk.
The turtle can only be caught in Northrend, so you must have felt the Wrath of the Lich King. The Sea Turtle mount can be caught from any pool in Northrend with the exception of quest-only pools like School of Tasty Reef Fish. Turtles are simply very rare catches from these pools. Expect to catch thousands of fish from pools before finding a turtle.
Northrend pools and zones are showed below, by the skill required to fish without catching junk. To fish pools without wasting time, you should fish in zones where your fishing skill equals, or is above, the "no-junk" skill shown.
When it comes to Toki's Sea Turtle, there is also 1 unconfirmed report of the Sea Turtle being caught from a Pool of Blood.
Some sources suggest that the Sea Turtle can be caught from any fishable water in Northrend. This is probably a mistranslation or misunderstanding: The English patch notes and achievement clearly state pool. In English, "pool" does not describe large bodies of water like seas.
If you don't already know how, you can learn the Find Fish ability from a Weather-Beaten Journals. Find Fish will display the location of pools on your minimap, making them easier to search for. Pools can be found along the coast and rivers, and in lakes or similar areas of water.
There are many different strategies for fishing pools and catching the Sea Turtle mount.
The first strategy is that the Sea Turtle is very rare, but the catch is random. Realistically, expect to spend days trying to catch the turtle. You might catch it a lot sooner.
The second one is that the item is bound to angle but no confirmation dialogue will appear. So you can safely auto-loot and quickly re-cast.
The third one is to always keep a few bag slots free. You can't loot the turtle if you don't have the bag space to store it.
The fourth one is that each pool contains a finite number of fish. Every 3-5 catches, you will need to move on and find a new pool to fish. Avoid sharing pools with other anglers: The pool will just be emptied faster and you will waste time re-mounting and casting into pools, which are emptied before your bobber splashes.
The fifth one is that pools respawn reasonably fast, often after about 10 minutes, but read Pool Spawning for further explanation. If there are several anglers trying to fish pools in the same area, consider fishing elsewhere. It may be quicker to find fresh pools in a different zone. Sometimes the best strategy may be to avoid all the strategies everyone else is using. Maybe Fishing Glassfin Minnow School is the logical "anti-strategy".
