In Lord of the Rings Online, you can gain many different abilities as you level. Traits are just one of these special items. So, we are willing to talk about its basics that you need to know about.
Speaking of traits, they are simple. As a matter of fact, every toon you have can gain traits and equip them. These traits are pretty "free-form" but do give your toon some extra buffs, abilities or bonuses. You can use any different combination of these traits as you gain them during your play. You will only be able to equip a certain number of these traits, which depend on your current level. It is for sure that you won't gain a trait slot to equip until you hit level 7. But, once you start leveling higher, you'll be able to equip more of the traits that you gain. And, you will find bards in just about every town that will help you trade out the traits that you want to use and replace.
In this game, there are four different types of traits you need to know such as Virtue, Class, Racial, and Legendary.
When it comes to Virtue Traits, they are the most common of all of the traits in the game and share with different classes as well as races. They can be earned through specific goals, like killing a certain number of monsters or by doing a specific number of quests in a given area. These traits fall under this category will give stat improvements, like resistances, more power, better morale, and the like. So, there are a massive number of these traits that you can earn under this category.
The Class traits are gained through the class that you have chosen. They are to help with your special skills and abilities that your class carries. They are gained through several ways such as gaining a specific amount of power for your toon, meeting a specific set of criteria in your class, achieving a specific number of critical strikes with one of your class skills and so on. These traits in this category tend to help improve on your class skills and buffs instead of normal areas like the Virtue traits do.
The Racial Traits are specifically tailored to your race. They help improve on racial abilities that you already have but the downside is that only a small number of these racial traits can be used at one time on your toon. But, since these are based on your class as well, this doesn't matter much when you have gained them as you'll have some that you can't even use.
The Legendary traits are the traits everyone covets. They are the hardest to gain and usually are only gained by those at very high levels and through hard work and play. But, once gained and equipped, they offer much better buffs, stat bonuses and other special abilities that normal traits do.
In a nutshell, those traits mostly are not hard to earn. In the game, you should constantly be checking with your local bards to see which traits you can equip that will offer you the best buffs, skills and abilities for you toon and playing style as you can earn them. You'll find the perfect set of traits for you to fully customize your toons by playing around with your traits and using them to see which combos work the best.
