When you are playing World of Warcraft, you will soon see that you are allowed to have pets, but leave your ideas of cute kittens and playful puppies at the login screen. After all, the first category of pets is known as combat pets and they can be summoned and, if properly taken care of, they can be controlled as well. When you are looking at pet classes in WoW, they are typically divided between Hunter pets and Warlock pets. Mages used to have the power to summon Water Elementals, while Priests can summon Shadowfiends, Shamans can use totems to summon Earth and Fire Elementals. Druids can now summon Treants. Hunters typically will catch wild beasts and keep them with them, while Warlocks will tend to summon their pets through spells and commands.
The second are known as guardian pets, and though they can be summoned, they cannot be controlled. They behave a great deal like Aggressive and Follow Combat pets, and most classes are permitted to have a guardian pet and combat pet appear at the same time. Engineers, a profession that you can take, are allowed to have two guardian pets at once, the Gnomish battle chicken and the dragonling. The debate about how useful this is in battle continues back and forth, and it is basically a personal preference. Guardian pets get summoned for a purpose, and then it will either "die" or the spell to keep it with you will run out. Guardian pets are excellent when it comes to keeping you safe, but that it can also attack before you are ready to deal with something; don't summon it until you are ready to use it, in other words!
When you are looking for pets but you don't need them to do anything like the functions above, you are looking for companion pets. These pets don't do anything in combat, and they don't really help you in any way, but my are they cute! They are vanity pets, essentially, and you will find that you can buy them or earn them through doing various different quests. You can also earn them through achievements, and you can use them to boast about going through a quest chain or just because you think that they are so cute. You can even get leases or balls for them. The sheer variety is great. You can find snakes, Bombay cats, tickbird hatchlings and even elephants. Some will vocalize, others have cute animations of distinct movements and it creates a real sense of personality.
When you are looking for a great winter pet, take a look at the winter reindeer, which is completely adorable; you'll even find him wrapped in pretty wrapping paper! He looks a lot like the Rudolph you remember from the children's song and you can find him near the Winter Veil tree around the holiday season. Another beautiful and striking pet is the great horned owl. He can fly and he is quite well animated. He is only sold to Alliance, but if you play Horde, you can still buy one from the auction. When you have acquired fifty vanity pet spells, you will get Stinker the Skunk, who can be a bit of a brat.
