Massively-multiplayer online role-playing games (aka MMORPGs) haven't had much success on consoles. The only ones that seemed to make a positive impact were 'Phantasy Star Online' on the DreamCast and GameCube, and ' Final Fantasy XI ' for the PS2 and Xbox 360 (as well as PC). Many cool-sounding games have been announced only to be whacked in development (e.g. 'True Fantasy Online' and 'Marvel Online').
In a recent interview with MTV's Multiplayer blog, Blizzard's Jeffrey Kaplan hinted that the developer's next MMO may end up on consoles, saying that the team members it acquired from Swingin' Ape are experienced with the PS3 and Xbox 360. (Swingin' Ape, the developer behind cult favorite 'Metal Arms: Glitch in the System,' was the second developer to take a shot at 'Starcraft Ghost,' an action game based on Blizzard's real-time strategy title.)
It's not as if the developer of ' World of Warcraft ' doesn't have console experience itself, having done 'Rock and Roll Racing' and 'The Lost Vikings' for the Super Nintendo before striking gold with the original 'Warcraft'. Blizzard also has the console experience of the developers it was joined with in the Activision-Vivendi Universal merger.
Considering the pre-pre-pre-alpha state of the game and the fact that current consoles are on the back nine of the lives, it would appear that the game would be for the PS4 or Xbox 3. By that time, 'World of Warcraft' may have fallen back down to earth. Not likely, but possible.
Until then, console owner may actually get other MMOs. 'DC Universe' is set for next year, while a 'Star Trek' game could also arrive next year or 2010. There's also 'The Agency' for the PS3, which promises to be an MMO action game.
