There're five basics any player should get to know before playing World of Warcraft online, whether they are new players or experienced to other online role-playing games.
The first basic is Navigation. Using the arrow keys on your keyboard or A,S,W and D keys, which will move you backwards, forwards, left, and right. You can also navigate by clicking both of the mouse buttons and holding them down. When you move your wrist, gliding the mouse along the screen your character will move in that direction as well.
The second one is Attack. You can attack an enemy by right clicking on them; your character will attack automatically when they are close enough. They will tell you if you are too far away or if you are out of range. You can also press the number keys assigned with your characters' attack. For example, '1' for a basic sword swipe attacks.
The third one is looting. It will fall dead to the ground in some sort of dramatic endeavor and will begin to sparkle or shimmer after you attack your target. If you scroll your mouse cursor over the corpse you should get a little picture of three little bags. This gives you the option to loot the body of the corpse. You can set it up so that you automatically pick everything up when you loot or you can pick and choose what you want. Looting can be useful even when its trivial things like 'crunchy spider legs,' you can always sell them to any vendor gaining you some extra copper!
The fourth one is Heal. It is useful for you to be able to heal yourself when you take on lots of enemies. You can take the professions that World of Warcraft offers (there are six major and minor professions). Herbalism, Alchemy, and First Aid are useful to help you be able to collect herbs and make your own potions or to be able to bandage yourself after a fight. You can also buy potions or loot them off of dead enemy corpses. Another way to have healing abilities depends on the class you take, for example, a Priest, Mage, or Paladin all would have some sort of healing ability after a certain level.
The last basic is resting. Being well rested helps your characters generate more experience points faster. You will notice when you are rested by the light blue color of your XP bar on the bottom of your screen or by the picture of your character in the top left hand corner will be flashing yellow and 'zzz' will appear underneath the picture. To become rested you simple press the 'x' key on your keyboard while inside of an Inn or right click on a piece of food; jerky, cheese, bread, and you will sit down and start to eat it allowing your character to rest. But be warned you can only rest away from enemies.
Overall you should be well on your way to level higher and higher when you get the hang of these five basics.
