The Grizzly Hills, located in south-eastern Northrend, is the home ground of the Grizzlemaw furbolgs. The dwarven settlement of Thor Modan can be found in the north, as well as the Scourge fortress of Drak'Tharon Keep. Over 20,000 furbolgs live in the Grizzly Hills, most in the large settlement of Grizzlemaw. To the north of the region sits Thor Modan, a Dwarven settlement while the Ice Troll fortress of Drak'Tharon Keep looks over the land perilously to the North West. Drak'tharon Keep is an ancient ice troll stronghold that has since been claimed by the Scourge. The undead control passage into the lands beyond from here.
In Northrend, the setting of World of Warcraft's latest expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, there are regions or zones whose beauty hides the turmoil and tension that envelops the whole continent. The Grizzly Hills is one example. A region of lush beauty, of untamed forests and clean waters, one would not expect that it is also the site of many wars, of chaos and disorder. Players with levels 74-76 who venture into the Wrath of the Lich King Grizzly Hills zone should expect to immediately get caught in the many battles that erupt amidst the splendor of the hills.
Previous to his defeat within Shadowfang Keep, Arugal has been resurrected and he has taken up residence in Dun Argol to the south east, from where he commands his legions of Worgen.
Along the south western coast, the Goblins of the Venture Company have set up a base of operations, from where they lead their attacks onto the landscape, as the machines cut through the forest at will. The Venture Company have also began laying traps for any Furbolgs that wander to close to their base of operations, much to the anger of Grizzlemaw.
Amongst the wilderness is said to be an ancient prehistoric bear that the Furbolgs regard very highly and worship him whenever the chance presents itself.
For the most time, the Grizzly Hills was at peace. However, it has seen many battles in the hills caused by the invasion of outside forces in recent years. Because the Grizzly Hills is teeming with wildlife, poachers and hunters are threatening to take over the Furbolg's hunting grounds. The Venture Company, a goblin organization, is cutting down the forests of the Grizzly Hills, prized for their old trees. These are all problems that the Furbolgs have to deal with but they are far from the most threatening. What causes most of the battles in the Wrath of the Lich King zone are the clashes between Furbolgs and the Drakkari ice trolls of the Undead. For centuries, the two races have maintained a tenuous peace. However, the sudden and unexplained steady invasion of the Drakarri ice trolls into the Grizzly Hills has the Fubolgs clamoring to protect their land and maintain their hold on it.
The Grizzly Hills are as hilly as the name suggests. Along the northern edges the land gains height and depth, approaching the level of small mountain ranges, while it flattens out a little in the south. Thick forest covers the land from end to end, broken only by small clearings or the space alongside one of the many streams and small rivers. Snow is everywhere but the region has little ice - the wind whistles overhead but the trees block it from entering down below, and the hills seem almost warm compared to the Dragonblight and the Borean Tundra. It's still dangerous, with treacherous slopes and hidden caves and partially frozen rivers, but better than most of the other regions. All manner of wild animals live in the area, and the hills are full of life. Wolves, bears, foxes, rabbits and some small deer are the most common. Mice and other rodents hide from the snowy owls and other raptors in the trees, but mercifully snakes and spiders aren't present here, likely due to the temperature. Wendigo and sasquatch prowl the hills, so it's best not to go out alone. The Drakkari live just north in Zul'Drak and sometimes their hunters drift down to the hills as well, in search of prey.
