With Wrath, Blizzard is catering to the casual WoW player with dungeons that can be easily completed in under an hour. The dungeons are quite fun, for the most part but they are painfully short. This may be great news for some people but we felt that many areas that really needed to be epic in nature tended to be only a handful of rooms. One of the most exciting dungeons is the new Caverns of Time instance. It's a recreation of the Warcraft III mission "The Culling of Stratholme" where Arthas, pre-northrend makes a critical decision that sets him on his path.
There are many new dungeons, both raid and small group, included with the Burning Crusade. A new battleground, "Eye of the Storm," is also included. One new dungeon that we're excited about is Karazhan, also known as Medivh's tower, which is located in Deadwind Pass. Because Medivh has played such a central role in Warcraft lore, we think that a lot of longtime players will be especially interested in seeing what Karazhan contains. As an example of other new locations that may be introduced, we plan on making some of the battles from the past accessible through the Caverns of Time. Also, Illidan's ominous Black Temple will be a fixture in the game as well.
New dungeons introduced with the Burning Crusade have two difficulty options; normal and heroic difficulty. In order to unlock the heroic level of a dungeon, players will need to be level 70 and achieve other objectives. While the challenge at heroic difficulty is much greater, the rewards also scale up accordingly.
When Wrath ships it will have three raid dungeons ready to go. The first is Naxxramas, which many people have already visited pre-BC. It has been reworked to accommodate smaller raid groups and the new class spells and mechanics. The second dungeon is the first of the Chamber of Aspects encounters against Sartharion the Onyx Guardian – a black dragon. In the third raid, you will be staring down Malygos – the blue dragonflight aspect.
Raiding has undergone major changes with every raid having a 10 man and 25 man option. The gear that drops will be of different quality for each and the encounters will be easier on 10 man mode, catered to a smaller group. In addition, the buff system has changed with many classes being able to offer each buff.
This was done so that no single class is essential to downing a boss, a major problem with Burning Crusade raids. This is a welcomed change to fix having to bring poor players simply for what they bring to the raid, but at the same time it does tend to homogenise the classes as well. The decision is still out as to whether this new way of raiding will be successful but Blizzard are determined to keep it as is, so players will just have to adjust.
In addition to the many instanced dungeons included in Outland, the expansion currently has two new dungeons, Karazhan and Caverns of Time, that are located in Azeroth.
The heroic difficulty option is only available in the new non-raid dungeons introduced with The Burning Crusade. At this time, we have no plans to to adjust the loot system of our previous raid dungeons and change the player caps of our existing raid dungeons, even we have no plans to create additional raid dungeons that accommodate more than 25 players.
One new outdoor raid encounter, Doom Lord Kazzak, can be found in Outland. We definitely have plans to implement additional outdoor raid encounters. We'll see changes to the reset times of the pre-Burning Crusade end-game instances. It's possible, but there are no plans to do so at this time.
