World of Warcraft was many years in the development and it showed in the first installment of the game. The two expansions are no different in that sense either, giving the players an eyeful of creativity that MMORPG coming out after World of Warcraft have not matched. Players choose a Horde or Alliance character, then their race. If a Horde character is selected they must choose to be a Tauren, Undead, Orc Troll and Blood Elf. If an Alliance is chosen, the player will select from Human, Night Elf, Dwarf, Gnome and Dranei. The Dranei and Blood Elf were added with the second expansion. The classes that can be chosen from are Warrior, Priest, Mage, Shaman, Hunter and Paladin. When a player has a character, reaching level 80, gives them the option to create a DK, which came out in the last expansion. Some classes are not available to each race, which is understandable but it would make for some interesting game play. Each race has its own starting area and to advance in level, the character or toon does quests to gain experience and money.
The game play is made interesting, when at level 10 characters gain the ability to create a trait tree. This gives the toon's class a direction to follow and a distinctive role to play while in a group. For instance a Warrior may choose to follow the protection tree, instead of arms or fury. The game has instances or dungeons, to which characters will get quests taking them into the appropriate dungeon. The game doesn't restrict characters from going back through those instances, nor do you need the quests. It is advisable to be of an appropriate level close to the level of the creatures or mob as they are called in game play. In the lower level instances it is not uncommon for a high level toon to "escort" low level or "noobs". In the top level instances, starting from the Dark Portal expansion, the instances can be set to "Heroic". This makes the game play of the group more difficult and very important that everyone know their role. It's also important to know the dungeon boss fights, because players tend to get upset when the group wipes. When you die, your gear is assessed 10% damage which costs money to repair.
The game also has BGs for PvP action. This is another aspect of the game to which Blizzard Entertainment did a wonderful job. Each BG has their own strategies, hold the resource to gain points or capture the flag. There is also one to get to the end boss and kill it for the victory while avoiding other toons that might attack you. In the early versions, Honor Points were awarded as well as kills which went towards gear from the vendors. The game has Capital cities which have a variety of vendors for gear, trainers for professions and class skills. Asking a guard will give you the location of what you seek on you map. You can always ask in the general chat channels, but you might not always like your answer as some of us who play might not be helpful. The game has AH to make you millions in wow gold or to just sell your items from loot or what your toon created from garnering profession skills. The markets have been known to vary from realm to realm and as in the real world, day by day. The game play has many aspects, just like Dark Moon Faire will come to a Horde or Alliance town.
