If people chose to get rid of the runes, that's certainly their choice. I can understand wanting to free up bank space, certainly, particularly over the space of time.
Many people playing now never had the chance to get those runes, and if you have none you're right on par with them.
But I don't lie when I say the Necrotic Runes are going to have a use again... quite soon.
Not a lot of people do... Necrotic Runes were the things that players acquired during the Scourge Invasion, the opening of Naxxramas the first time around, when necropolises were invading all the major cities in Azeroth. Players could use these items when purchasing certain gear with +damage against Undead creatures, as well as other items from the Argent Dawn.
When the Scourge Invasion was over, many players were left with several of these items left over, but Blizzard assured players that they would have a use for them again. 2 years later, and it looks like that use might be approaching. Earlier, Blizzard World Designer Kisirani hinted that players who have been holding onto their Necrotic Runes would soon be glad they did.
But well. They promised it would be an annual event at the time, then the following year nothing happened and they said "ahh we ran out of time, we will try next year" then a year later it was "sorry not happening this year but something much larger will be coming" (WOTLK hint) now finally on the 3rd anniversary perhaps it will be back.
