That was the primary goal for resilience, to make sure that the fight times in PvP were long enough that the crit results weren't streaky enough that it was too random number generator-driven, or that you just didn't have enough time to play your class. It accomplished that, and I think a secondary benefit was that you could more clearly distinguish what kind of activities you were doing. There's PvP gear, PvE gear, and you could kind of feel different from each other. It almost did that too much, in that it has in a lot of ways provided a pretty big barrier to cross-over gameplay.

We definitely want to encourage players as much as possible to experience as much WoW as they can, so it really behooves us to make sure that there's some kind of crossover, where you can take your PvE gear to PvP, and your PvP gear to PvE. It's there that we felt that the crossover was weakest. It's not that we really want to change the stats on the PvE gear, we just want to make sure that PvE players have access to some reasonable level of resilience so that they can do arenas and have a fun experience without just blowing up.

GameSpy: Why not just reduce the amount of damage that players deal in PvP, without introducing the resilience mechanic and a whole new set of gear?
Tom Chilton: I think that's a very dangerous road to go down, because it introduces severe balance complications for us in the long run. We actually went to great strides with WoW when we were first developing to try and make sure that damage meant the same thing in PvE as it did in PvP. Especially since we still plan to support things like world PvP, etc., where you're exposed to multiple things in the environment. I think that's just one of our underlying philosophical goals, that the formulas work the same in PvE and PvP, and that we don't start going down this path where we're developing two different games that aren't part of the same goal.
GameSpy: Last question: what group composition will come out on top in the arena tournament?
Tom Chilton: Well, I think group comp could be very dicey to predict, because there's the metagame and counter-compositions. So, even if the team is successful with one group comp, that's not necessarily what they're going to win with in their final games. So I'm not even going to try and make any predictions about that. I just hope that we see as many different group compositions be as viable as possible.
GameSpy: We can also expect that the group composition that wins overall will get nerfed shortly afterwards?
Tom Chilton : (laughs) If it feels like that particular group composition dominated the tournament, then I would say yes, but not necessarily just the winners.
