EVE Rifter Guide

Author: inwowgold Source: http://www.inwowgold.com

In EVE online, the rifter is the workhorse of the Minmatar fleet and probably the toughest frigate. What's more, it is one of the best choices for PvP, giving rookies a fighting chance as they learn to play. It is fast and extremely powerful with a decent range of slots making it a flexible craft. Still rifter is a good choice of ship even after the recent patch has rebalanced a number of factors in the game and reduced the effectiveness of it. The frigate class is light and fast so they are best for scouting or attacking weaker ships but you can fit them out for any purpose.
To fit an armor tank is the best thing you can do with your ship for solo PVP. There are two basic kinds of armor tank that you can fit. A buffer tank in which you can fit an oversized armor plate and a damage control whereas an active tank where you can fit a regular plate armor repairer and a resistance module. To make your tank completely capacitor independent is the advantage of a buffer tank for you. You have a very large plate that buffers your opponents' damage while you attempt to overwhelm their defenses with your guns. The best thing about this is that there is no need to micromanage during combat. All you have to concentrate on is putting the maximum damage onto your opponent. This is a very Minmatar approach to combat.
You have to use up your capacitor to repair the incoming damage and your armor can not take the same punishment as a buffer tank, this is the difference between the active tank and a buffer tank. But the active tank has its own advantages, especially against bigger targets. Because you are carrying a smaller plate your ship has less mass and therefore is faster and more agile playing to the strengths of the Rifter. In turn, this should help you evade more of the enemy's fire, especially against cruiser-sized targets. The ability to repair your own armor means that you don't need to dock up in order to be ready for a second fight or if there're a great amount of opponents in your engagement a buffer might not last long enough to beat both targets.
In the cases of the buffer tank, you can see that there is no need to worry about your capacitor during the fight. In fact you can run your web, scrambler, and microwarp drive continually for more than three minutes with top skills. Realistically you won't be running your microwarp drive during the fight anyway. This is a tough little cookie with almost 6,000 effective hit points.
But the active tank allows you to pack slightly bigger guns so you do more damage. It is also a bit quicker and more nimble than the passive version. The main difference is that you have fewer effective hit points so will have to pulse your armor repairer sometimes to keep your armor alive. You can only run this for 30s at a time, though, so it's not much use against heavy volleys but will make a difference in a long fight where the damage is of a gentler variety.
For rifters, they have four high-powered slots, three mid-powered slots and three low-powered slots which make them offensive craft because speaking high-powered slots are for offensive weapons, mid-powered slots are for propulsion, sensor, shield affecting and electronic items and low-powered slots are for armor and assistance modules.
There are loads of different options for your choosing when you fit out your ship there. To begin with defense, you will want to buy some kinds of armor. The choice is between fitting a large armor plate which will require no further action and hopefully give you the time you need to blast your opponent into oblivion. However it will weigh you down and slow your top speed. Alternatively you fit a normal armor plate and bolster it with an armor repairer and a resistance module, this is known as an active tank which means that you will have to use your capacitor to repair damage as you fight but your craft will remain light and fast. You will certainly need repair skills for this set up to work well so you may be best starting out with fixes armor- a buffer tank.
