There is a method for player to earn experience points and level up their character with the latest Final Fantasy XI Wings of The Goddess expansion, called level sync.
Soloing mobs or seeking a party was the previous method for earning experience points. Both had their drawbacks.
Soloing experience points would take too long to earn a few hundred or thousand experience points; needles to say it's very risky because if you died, you're right back at square one because of the experience point penalty for deaths.
Seeking a party had its drawbacks too. Mainly because you sometimes could waste so much time just trying to get invited to join a party or for the go-getter; you could start building your own party. Although; building your own party seems to be the smarter choice because you could get whatever jobs you felt would be appropriate, you're still taking a risk of having bad players in the party. Even with just one terrible player in the mix, your experience party could be a dud and earn experience points at a very slow pace. Now ideally if you're building a party you would try to get players you actually knew or linkshell mates to join. This way you're going to have more reliable players in the party and you can almost guarantee it will be a pleasant experience for all.
There are two main reasons to introduce leveling syncing. The first one was for the current FFXI player that wanted to introduce the game to the friend but couldn't level with them because of the great level gap and it was for the player that wished to level with linkshell mates but once again could not because of the level gap.
The second one was that level sync parties have now become the primary method for gaining points and leveling one's character. Level sync significantly outweighs the previous experience point methods because it offers a much more enjoyable scenario for the entire party. Gone are the days of seeking a party for hours on end for most non-desirable jobs. Even the once thought solo jobs can get in on the action.
How does level syncing work? It is easy and requires no special equipment or items. You start building your party as you normally would by grabbing the appropriate jobs only this time. You don't need to pay attention to any player's current level except for the lowest leveled player. So you could grab a level 75 Paladin, a level 53 White Mage, a level 18 Ranger and so on. When you sync the party everyone in the party will cap to the lowest level of the party, so in this example it would be the level 18 Ranger's level. The party leader will have the option under the party menu options to Level Sync the party. Once the party leader activates the level sync option you will receive a 30 second warning announcing the level sync will begin and that everyone in the party will be synced down.
A player in level sync party now has a level cap of the lowest level in the party but their gear is actually capped to that level as well. This is probably one of the best highlights of level syncing. You do not need to lug around tons of armor as previously done. In a sync party you can still wear your level 75 armor, relic gear, artifact gear and the like. All weapons are also synced down. You basically just need to show up in the armor and with the weapons you had equipped as uncapped. There has been some talk that synced down weapons are not as good as level appropriate ones, they still are decent and some still have their attributes associated with them.
