In the beginning, you will have to level yourself from 1 to 60. Players will level up at an average paced. There were some that will level up fast with 15 or 13 days of game-play time, were most will level up to 60 for even longer time. With this paced you can get your first character from level 1 to 60 in 5 to 6 months of an average of like 2 hours a day for playing.
This all change when players become more skilled in the game, furthermore website that give tips to the game and the building of game databases like Thottbot and WOWhead has made the leveling more easy. Then the game guides started to show up, competing for the lowest game-play time for leveling. Some expert could do it for 7 then 6 and even 5 days.
When the Burning Crusade came out there was hope that it will be more difficulty. That was not true and you could make it from start to end, 60 to 70, in less than a day of game-play time. With the tuned-down of the classic and Burning Crusade some have accomplished to go from level 1 to 70 in less than 4 days of game-play time.
Then there came the Wrath of the Lich King, and with more than 1.5 million XP per level many said it will take a lot of time to complete. Now it's well known that you can make it with less than 5 hours per level. So if you will need to level from level 70 to 80, it should not take you more than 2 days of game-play time.
That said you can get from level 1 to 80 in less than 7 days of game-play time, which is half the time it will take you to level from level 1 to 60 in the beginning (You will have to buy 3 products to enjoy it - but don't say Blizzard I'm complaining).
Even more then that, with WotLK you get play a Death Knight that means that you can start a new character at level 58 and level to 80 in less than 4 days of game-play time. Additionally, as players will get more familiar with WotLK this time will get even shorter.
Then you will ask how much time it will take you to get to level 80?
For a new character, from level 1 to 80 with an average of 2 hours a day for playing, you are looking at less than 3 months. If you are already playing and you go for a Death Knight you can level it in less than 2 months, and I guess that if you are an expert you can even do it for just more than one month. The time needed for enjoying the end game contents as become very accessible for all.
