With the advent of the Burning Crusade expansion, Alliance players were finally given the Shaman class, which until that point had been Horde-exclusive.
Shamans are a hybrid class, meaning that they have the ability to cast spells, fight with melee weapons or act as a healer, which depend on how you arrange the talent spec.
It is very difficult and not very fun to level up a healer so you want to go with either a caster or a melee fighter specialization for leveling. You are capable of building you Shaman into a caster by putting your talent points into the Elemental talent tree. You make your character into a melee fighter by putting talent points into the Enhancement tree.
As a Shaman, it starts the game with a mace and shield. Not only can you train in most of the other weapon types, not swords, alas but you can duel-wield weapons even though it's a talent in the Enhancement talent tree, which works if you're into melee damage.
Given that the weapon and shield setup gives you more armor, it will work great for a caster. And more armor means that you can survive a few more hits while you cast Chain Lightning.
The story behind Shamans is that they are in tune with nature and fight using the elements, they use instant cast spells called Shocks like Earth Shock, Fire Shock, and the ever-popular Frost Shock.
For the most part, Shamans come with totems. You earn each of the four elemental totems by doing quests. Before level 5, you can get the Earth totem, which is about defense and making you stronger. And around level 10 you can get the Fire totem, which has all kinds of near offensive spells. At level 20 you can get the Water Totem, which does nice things like heal you and restore mana. At level 30 you can get the Wind Totem, which is the wildcard of the bunch. It gives you spells to increase your damage, reduce ranged damage taken, and other fun things like give you nature resistance.
For Shamans, other fun things that they get are Ghost Wolf and Astral Recall. Ghost Wolf allows you to shape shift into a transparent wolf and gives you a twenty percent speed increase. Astral Recall lets you teleport back to your home town or city every fifteen minutes, as opposed to the hour you must wait to use your hearthstone.
To spec Enhancement is one way to level until you reach level 60, then respec to Elemental when you get to Outland, which gives you more range and powers up your spells. By the time you reach level 60, you'll know whether you'd rather cast or get in and whale away with your melee weapons.
You should take your hybrid Elemental or Restoration build into consideration when you want to play a healer. You can get some of the healing talents and some of the spell damage talents, so you can still kill monsters out in the world, but have enough healing power and mana to heal your buddies in a dungeon. This works better past level 60, because you have more talent points.
It draws a conclusion that a Shaman class is fun to level and gives you multiple options when it comes to killing monsters. Due to the fact that Shamans totems buff up everybody in a group or a dungeon, they are good to have. That is to say, you can give the Shaman class a try if you take pleasure in playing a caster.
