When new recipes are added to the game that use mats that were not previously in demand, demand for those mats can skyrocket in the first few days after the patch. Even if the new recipes don't turn out to be all that useful in the long run, they will be popular in the early days just for the novelty value alone. Patch 3.1 is introducing several new recipes across the different professions. The new blacksmithing items are very interesting. These highly desirable purple items will likely remain viable long after the novelty of the patch has worn off. Because of this, titansteel will be a great seller when the patch comes out.
New Raid Zone Ulduar might not seem as obvious, but a new raid zone offers several opportunities for making wow gold. Perhaps the most profitable is the fact that high end guilds will immediately move in and start looting upgraded gear. These upgrades will all need to be enchanted and gems so if you are an enchanter or a jewelcrafter, you will be busy. And if you aren't one of these, you can still make wow gold by selling the mats. The second way that you can profit from Ulduar raiders is by meeting the increased demand for stat buffing potions or the mats to make them. While raiders might not be worried about fully buffing for Naxx anymore, they will want to be when they first go into Ulduar. So the potion market will be great until they start to get geared up.
New patches always bring opportunities for the observant WoW entrepreneur to make a great profit. Read through the patch notes for the Public Test Realms when they are released. Look for information on fan sites and blogs or copy a character on the Public Test Realm yourself to see what's coming up in a new patch before it is released and stock up on items that will be in demand. New recipes and new high level content are always great ways to make gold in WoW.
